Who is this course for?
If you have a strong interest in caring for horses, this course will be a good introduction and a stepping stone into a rewarding industry. You will get involved in handling, feeding and watering horses, preparing and maintaining their accommodation and ensuring their health and welfare.
It is expected that you will have a good level of fitness and enjoy working outside so that you can participate in the practical elements of the course.
Entry Requirements
Ideally you should have grade 2 in GCSE English and Maths, or the equivalent, and a sound interest in the equine industry. All applicants will be interviewed and will undertake an initial assessment in English and maths.
What will you learn?
You will learn about different aspect of the horse, alongside developing your literacy, IT and numeracy. You will work practically with a wide variety of horses on our established yard.
Mandatory modules and units will be discussed with you at your interview.

What will you need to bring with you?
You will be required to supply your own:
• Up to standard riding hat and gloves
• Closed-toe flat steel toe-capped boots
• Derby College Group polo and sweatshirt
• Writing materials
Information on where to buy these will be given at enrolment.
Long hair is to be tied back and no nail varnish, false or long nails, ripped clothing, fake eyelashes or jewellery should be worn while on practical lessons. These rules are non-negotiable.
How will you be assessed?
You will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence reflecting your achievements throughout the course, including written assignments and practical assessments and to take an online multiple-choice test towards the end of the course.

Further Study
If you do well on this course, it may be possible to progress to a Level 2 Diploma or Level 2 Certificate. You must have a minimum of a Merit grade to advance to the Level 2 Diploma and a Pass grade to progress to the Level 2 Certificate.
