Keeper for a day is an opportunity to come and experience the life of an animal keeper and help care for all the animals at Broomfield Hall’s Animal Unit. You will assist the animal unit staff in the daily care and husbandry for over 47 species of animals and gain an insight into this fabulous career pathway.

Course Information for Students

This experience aims to provide you with an understanding of the principles of animal husbandry and care through working on the animal unit at the Broomfield Hall campus. 

We currently have over 47 species of animals that require our care. As part of your role, you will assist the animal unit staff with the daily husbandry and care for the animals and gain a valuable insight into this career pathway.  

The experience is for 6 hours and available at weekends or during school holidays. Price is £95 per person and gift vouchers are available.  

You need basic literacy and numeracy skills plus some basic knowledge of animal care.  You should be aged six years or over.

The course will cover:

  • Feeding the animals
  • Health checking the animals
  • Cleaning their accommodation
  • Making enrichment for the animals
  • Maintenance of the animal unit
  • Exercising the animals
  • Handling the animals
  • Learn about their care and needs

The course is a practical experience on the Animal Unit at Broomfield Hall 

You will need to come appropriately dressed for working with animals and working outdoors i.e., trousers and waterproof coat. You will be required to supply your own boots or wellingtons – preferably steel toe capped. A packed lunch and drink is also required for the experience.  

There is no assessment.
