Course Information for Students

The Junior Zoo Club experience is a group course, where children will get to work closely with the animals at the college and learn what it is like to work as a zoo keeper. The course is for young aspiring animal keepers to learn about animal husbandry, health and handling. During the day children will get to handling and feed our rabbits and guinea pigs, feed and handle some reptiles, make enrichment for our meerkats and porcupines, meet our wallabies, feed our goats, pigs and alpacas and lots of other exciting activities. 

The experience is for 6 hours and available during some school holidays. Price is £30 per person. Limited number of places available

You need basic literacy and numeracy skills plus some basic knowledge of animal care. The course is for ages 6 – 12 year olds.  

The course will cover:

  • Feeding the animals
  • Health checking the animals
  • Cleaning their accommodation
  • Making enrichment for the animals
  • Maintenance on the animal unit
  • Exercising the animals
  • Handling the animals
  • Learning about their care and needs
  • Bathing tortoises

The course is a practical experience on the Animal Unit at Broomfield Hall 

You will need to come appropriately dressed for working with animals and working outdoors i.e., trousers and waterproof coat. You will be required to supply your own boots or wellingtons – preferably steel toe capped. A packed lunch and drink are also required for the experience.  

There is no assessment.
