Who is this course for?
This programme is aimed at students who are looking at progressing to an apprenticeship programme and who would like to gain knowledge and practical skills in preparation for the workplace.
The course is delivered over 12 weeks and focuses on gaining the BHS Challenge Award certificates covering a wide variety of topics within horse care. The programme will include one day per week attending a classroom/practical workshop at Derby College Equestrian Centre, and at least two days per week out on work placement gaining experience in the industry. In order to support their main programme of study, students will also develop employability skills.
Entry Requirements
- Some experience volunteering with horses
- Good work ethic
- Commitment to a career in the equine industry
- Three GCSEs at grade D/3 or above
Please note: to undertake the optional riding module, you must be competent in walk, trot and canter.
What will you learn?
The mandatory modules are split into four Challenge Awards covering a variety of horse care topics:
- Handling your Horse: Health and Safety, Handling and Leading
- Caring for your Horse: Stable and Field Care, Saddlery and Equipment, Grooming
- Knowing your Horse: Behaviour, Identification, Anatomy, Health, Feeding, Fitness
- Lunging your Horse
- Optional Riding module
You will also undertake mandatory work experience days within your chosen work placements.
Maths, English and employability skills will be embedded throughout the course.
How will you learn?
The course is delivered over 12 weeks. You will attend one day per week on site at Broomfield Hall Equestrian Centre and have a minimum of two days per week at your chosen work placement. This could be at one or two different work placement settings.
What will you need to bring with you?
College requirements are steel toe-cap boots, correct standard riding hat and gloves. You also need stationery including folders, paper and pens.
How will you be assessed?
In-class assessments will be ongoing throughout the course as various tasks are covered. Work experience will be evidenced through diary sheets and employer witness statements. No final exam is necessary.
Where next?
You could progress to the Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship or further industry qualifications.
