Course Information for Students

The Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Personal Training builds on the knowledge gained on a Level 3 Personal Training course by applying new techniques to support, enhance and manage the client’s journey while helping them to achieve their goals.

This is a full-time Level 4 study programme which incorporates a number of additional qualifications for continued professional development in this sector.

The field of personal training and the needs of modern day professional personal trainers are rapidly evolving in line with the broad-ranging needs and goals of the clients they serve. As a result, the industry has never been more competitive. Highly successful personal trainers are results driven and confidently differentiate the services they offer to provide an ethical service and sustain a highly successful business. Driving this success is a more scientific and evidence-based approach to programming, training, monitoring and managing clients which translates into better client retention and attracting new clients.

All applicants should have completed a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training which must be evidenced prior to starting this programme. If you’re 18, this course is free. Charges apply for those aged 19+.

Learners must hold a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (or equivalent qualification) which should be evidenced prior to starting the course.

They must also be able to apply factual and theoretical knowledge and be able to use a range of cognitive and practical skills to generate specific solutions for personal training clients. This will require learners to work in predictable and unpredictable situations using their knowledge, skills and competencies pitched at Level 4.

All candidates will need to have achieved English and Maths GCSE at grade 4 or higher.

This qualification provides learners with the enhanced knowledge and skills to fully understand their clients, utilise an evidence-based approach to programming and develop a successful and sustainable personal training business. It covers:

  • Research, evaluation and use of credible research and information to inform personal training / coaching practice
  • Integration and application of technologies, digital and social media into personal training practice to support, enhance and manage the client journey
  • The application of behaviour change and communication techniques to support, enhance and manage the client journey
  • Assessment, performance analysis and evaluation to support, enhance and manage the client journey
  • Design and application of long-term periodisation, planning, coaching and evaluation to optimise client success

The study programme will also include: tutorial, enrichment, work placement totalling 108 hours, designed exercise programmes for older adults, nutrition for exercise and health, and instructing studio cycling,

This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall but your Personal Training will take place in a gym or appropriate fitness venue. You should expect to spend one day in College and at least one day in a vocational setting, undertaking training with clients.

There are practical sessions in which you will be expected to take part and others that you are expected to lead.

We encourage learners to bring their own laptop to aid their studies. As this is a level 4 qualification, the academic expectation is that of the first year of a degree programme. Candidates will need to take advantage of our HE Study Coaches to help them with theoretical writing and academic research.

You will be expected to maintain an attendance of over 95% throughout the year.

There are no additional costs.

Students are expected to wear black tops (T-shirts, jumpers, hoodies etc) when in class and when representing the sports department during practical sessions. Students are free to wear what they choose on their lower half, providing it is suitable for the activity being undertaken.

There are DCG-branded HE specific kit options to purchase should students wish to do so. However, this is not mandatory: we merely expect compliance with our colour code.

All students will benefit from having a tablet or laptop to aid them with their studies.

This course is CIMSPA endorsed.

You will be assessed via:

  • Case studies
  • Presentations
  • Observations
  • Viva

Your attendance will be monitored throughout the course, with expectations that it is maintained above 95% at all times.

Students who complete this qualification will be able to enhance their employment credibility within the fitness industry.

They can also consider progression to the:

  • Foundation Degree in Sport Coaching
  • Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy
