Course Information for Students

BTEC First qualifications were originally designed for use in colleges, schools and the workplace as an introductory course for learners who want to study in the context of a vocational sector.

The knowledge, understanding and skills learned in studying a BTEC First will aid progression to further study and prepare learners to enter the workplace. This qualification gives progression to a Level 3 course or an apprenticeship.

BTECs are vocationally-related qualifications, where learners develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. They are popular and effective because they enable learners to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace.

These skills include: teamworking; problem solving; working from a prescribed brief; working to deadlines; presenting information effectively; and accurately completing administrative tasks and processes. BTEC Firsts motivate learners and open doors to progression to further study and responsibility in the workplace.

You need:

  • GCSE English Language graded 4/C or above
  • Three further GCSEs graded 3/D or above (Maths should be graded at least 3/D)

A vocational qualification at Merit grade or above would be considered but it should be accompanied by GCSE English Language and GCSE Maths graded at 3/C or above.

Other BTEC Level 2 qualifications are available, based on your qualifications.

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Extended Certificate:

  • has mandatory and optional specialist units
  • has 16.67 per cent of the qualification (2 units) externally assessed: Pearson sets and marks these assessments
  • is graded from Level 2 PP to Level 2 D*D*

This course will be delivered onsite at the Roundhouse campus.

There is an additional cost for the text book and exam revision guide (students are advised to purchase their own copy).

The Pearson BTEC Level 2 First Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma in Business include two externally-assessed units. This will help learners as they progress either into higher levels of vocational learning or to related academic qualifications.

The remaining units are internally assessed. Internal assessment allows learners to develop a wider range of skills and provides evidence towards meeting the unit assessment criteria. Evidence for assessment can be generated through a range of activities, including role play, practical performance and verbal presentations.

Further Study

The BTEC Level 2 Extended First Certificate provides the knowledge, skills and understanding for Level 2 learners to progress to:

  • other Level 2 vocational qualifications and related competence-based qualifications for the Business sector
  • Level 3 vocational qualifications, such as BTEC Nationals, specifically the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National in Business
  • competency-based qualifications such as the Pearson BTEC NVQ Level 2 in either Business Administration or Team Leading, or the Pearson BTEC NVQ Level 3 in either Business Administration or Management, or their corresponding apprenticeships
  • employment within the business industry, for example entry level job roles within the sector.

Employer shows trust in teenage business admin apprentice Jess

I’d been working part-time as an admin assistant at Jackson Purdue Lever for about a year before being taken on as an apprentice, so I already knew everyone. I’m given quite a lot of responsibility at work, which makes me feel that my employer trusts me. I’m responsible for ordering all the stationery, for instance. It’s important to get it right. I also spend a lot of time writing up reports for the structural survey team and recording information on Excel spreadsheets as well as welcoming visitors to the firm.

Business student plans to study Stateside

Going to Derby College has helped inspire me. Unlike sixth form college you're encouraged to take more responsibility for yourself. Studying in the USA or Canada will be a great adventure and going to Derby College has taught me to be so much more independent. I've talked through my university plans with my tutors and they've helped me find links to overseas courses etc.
