Course Information for Students

Start any time to build up your basic IT skills with this free beginner’s course. Whatever your starting point, we will support you to gain confidence. Then, when you are ready – should you wish – we will recommend a transfer to an appropriate accredited course.

This course is suitable for the complete beginner and for those with little understanding of computer software.  It will include a range of everyday topics for communicating online; using online booking systems; buying online; and staying safe online.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You just need an interest in improving your IT skills.

We will assess your current knowledge level and then work on the areas you most need to improve. Typical areas of study include:

  • Communicating
  • Handling information and content
  • Transacting
  • Problem solving
  • Being safe and legal online

You will learn in an informal classroom setting using one of our PCs or laptops.

Just yourself (although a pen and paper might be handy to take notes)!

We will save any work that you complete during the course in an ePortfolio as evidence of your progress.

Improving your IT skills has many benefits. Such skills are now used in almost every part of our life at home and work, whether knowing how to safely ‘surf’ the Internet, manage your online bank account, apply for a job or help the kids with homework.

We have lots of follow-on courses, many of which are also free, to support your growing digital confidence, including:

  • IT for Education – five sessions to help you get the most out of studying with Derby College Group
  • Essential Digital Skills Qualification (EDSQ) – the new national standard, enabling adults to safely benefit from, participate in and contribute to the digital world
  • Level 2 IT User Skills – enabling you to improve your employability and develop your skills with the key Microsoft Office software including: IT User Fundamentals, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Presentation Software, and Improving Productivity using IT
