Course Information for Students

Functional Maths is an approach to teaching maths that helps people to gain the most out of life, learning and work.  Joining a Functional Maths class will give you the opportunity to improve your maths skills and to use these skills for practical problem-solving. It will build your confidence in how to use maths in all aspects of your everyday life.

There will be up to 15 learners on each course. You will have the opportunity to learn in a variety of different ways in a friendly, relaxed environment.

The course is available at various community centres across Derby. Give us a call and find out if there is one near you!

There are no formal entry requirements to access this course.

All applicants will be invited to an interview and assessment session. On completion of the initial assessment, you will discuss the most appropriate level of course to meet your needs.

We can offer a variety of courses to meet your individual needs including Entry Level short awards, Functional Skills and GCSEs.

This course is available at various levels. You will receive guidance on which level is the most appropriate for you.

The course will cover:

  • Handling large numbers and calculation skills – for when there’s no calculator to hand
  • Calculating using fractions, percentages and decimals – to help you handle money
  • Measuring perimeters and areas, working out sizes of objects or spaces – for all those DIY and gardening jobs
  • Reading and interpreting tables, graphs, charts and other numerical data – to ensure you do not get misled by statistics
  • Calculating simple probability
  • How to use a calculator and to check your answers

You will get the chance to apply these maths skills in a wide variety of situations and will gain experience in using maths when making decisions and explaining the reasons behind these decisions.

This course will be delivered once a week in one of our partner community venues. Current venues to choose from are based in Sinfin and Alvaston. Look out for more venues soon!

We recommend that you purchase ‘Maths The Basics’ 3rd Edition, Oxford University Press ISBN 978-1-382-00506-7 and a non-scientific calculator. (Tip- go for a reputable brand with easy-to-use buttons.)

And don’t forget your stationery, a notebook and pens, pencils, ruler, protractor, and compass.

At the start of the course you will be assessed to find out what you need to learn. You will then agree an individual learning plan appropriate to your situation and needs.

You will be assessed informally throughout the course to check on your progress.

Qualifications are obtained by completing a written or online test.

What you do next is up to you:

  • Use the skills you learn in work, study or everyday life
  • Gain a qualification
  • Continue studying to improve your skills further
