Course Information for Students

Level 2 Functional Skills Maths is a free, nationally recognised qualification designed to help people get the most out of work, education, and everyday life.

Whether you want to improve your job prospects, get higher grades on that next course or just feel more confident supporting your children with homework; studying Maths is a great way to build your confidence.

This fast track option is set over 16 weeks and will enable you to complete the assessment before the summer holidays, ideal if you are hoping to start a new course in September.

There are no formal entry requirements to access this course however you must have sufficient underpinning maths knowledge in order to make this fast track course a viable option.

All applicants will be invited to complete an interview and assessment. The assessment will give us an indication of your current level and learning needs. If this course is not suitable at this time then we will discuss alternative routes of study

The course will cover:

  • Handling large numbers and calculation skills – for when there’s no calculator to hand
  • Calculating using fractions, percentages and decimals – to help you handle money
  • Measuring perimeters and areas, working out sizes of objects or spaces – for all those DIY and gardening jobs
  • Reading and interpreting tables, graphs, charts and other numerical data – to ensure you do not get misled by statistics
  • Calculating simple probability
  • How to use a calculator and to check your answers.

You will get the chance to apply these maths skills in a wide variety of situations and will gain experience in using maths when making decisions and explaining the reasons behind these decisions.

Joining a Functional Maths class will give you the opportunity to improve your maths skills and to use these skills for practical problem solving. It will build your confidence in how to use maths in all aspects of your everyday life.

You will learn in a variety of ways in a friendly, relaxed environment.

We recommend that you purchase ‘Maths The Basics’ 3rd Edition, Oxford University press ISBN 978-1-382-00506-7 and a non-scientific calculator. (Tip- go for a reputable brand with easy-to-use buttons.)

And don’t forget your stationery, a notebook and pens, pencils, ruler, protractor, and compass.

Qualifications are obtained by completing an online or written test

Gaining a Level 2 Functional Skills maths qualification will help you in any future course of study that you may be considering. For individuals wishing to move into Higher Education, Level 2 is accepted for entry to a range of courses (check with the course providers for information on specific courses).

Employers consider Functional Skills to be essential in the workplace so achievement of a Level 2 qualification will give you an advantage in the job market.
