The Animal Unit at Broomfield Hall will be getting visitors into the Halloween mood on Sunday October 28 with the chance to get up close and personal with some of the creepy crawlies who are looked after by students there.

The open day between 10am and 4pm will have a wide range of family activities.

Derby College's Broomfield Hall will hold its annual open day on Sunday June 17 between 10am and 4pm with a wide range of family-friendly activities and demonstrations by students.

There will be a number of have a go activities - including tree climbing, sports and feeding some of the animals.

Derby College Sports student Justin Taylor-Tipton (17) from West Hallam recently returned from Switzerland with a clutch more medals in Freestyle Skiing.

Justin, a former pupil at Kirk Hallam Community Academy, is studying Sports Coaching at the College's Broomfield Hall campus and spends the winter season training in Switzerland.

An Animal Care lecturer at Derby College's Broomfield Hall has won international recognition for her pioneering research into the benefits of human-animal interactions with cheetahs.

Stacey Higgs (27) from Nottingham applied to the recent World Academy Science, Engineering and Technology conference held in Singapore for permission to present her MA Anthrozoology dissertation on the controversial subject.

Derby College's Animal Unit at Broomfield Hall in Morley will be raising the profile of conservation issues around the world and closer to home as part of its open day on Sunday April 22.

Students have prepared a number of displays to highlight work that they have completed during their study programmes such as the risk to ocean species from discarded plastics. They will also share the work they have done to rehabilitate and return hedgehogs to the wild as well as conservation work completed during previous study trips to South Africa.

The first students from Derby College's new level 3 Agriculture study programme based at Broomfield Hall in Morley have secured places at university.

James Boa (18) from Borrowash and Chloe Culyer (19) from Chesterfield have both secured places at Reaseheath Agriculture College in Nantwich to study a Foundation degree in Agriculture. Bethany Rains (18) from Belper has offers from both Reaseheath and Harper Adams University in Newport and is considering her options.

Youngsters will be able to join students and staff to feed the meerkats, goats and alpacas. There will also be the opportunity to get hands on and handle some of the animals.

An Animal Care student at Derby College's Broomfield Hall campus in Morley is gearing up to compete in the International Sled Dogs Sports Federation dryland world championships in Poland this weekend (Nov 24-26).

Shauna Leigh Ward (16) from Eastwood will compete in the junior section of the event – racing with a team of four Siberian Huskies against competitors from across the world. She competes under the title known as Team Quileute named after the family's raw dog food business.

Agricultural learners at Derby College's Broomfield Hall have harvested a bumper crop of pumpkins in time for Hallowe'en.
