Course Summary

The city of Derby and the surrounding area is world renowned for its engineering and manufacturing industry and is populated with world-leading employers and their high-quality supply chains.

The engineering sector is also still growing at a considerable rate, particularly with the development of new technologies which in turn has led to skill shortages and demand for high performing engineers.

Using the latest suite of qualifications, the one-year Extended Diploma top-up in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering has been designed to further support your development as an engineer, leading to a highly rewarding and well paid career in this sector. It also offers a seamless transition of credits into an engineering apprenticeship.

 

Entry requirements

Prior achievement of the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering at grade MMP is mandatory for this course, along with the following GCSEs and grades:

  • English 4/C
  • Maths 5/B
  • Science 4/C

Course Content

In addition to the nine units achieved as part of the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, this Level 3 Extended Diploma consists of the following additional units:

  • Further Engineering Mathematics
  • Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems and Devices
  • Selecting and Using Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Applications of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) in Engineering
  • Principles and Applications of Electronic Devices and Circuits
  • Manufacturing Planning
  • Industrial Robot Technology
  • Engineering Project (Double)

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a variety of methods including:

  • Written assignments
  • Practical assessments
  • Presentations
  • Industry project

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

In addition to regular writing materials and a scientific calculator, specific PPE may need to be purchased for selected activities.

What can I do after this course?

On successful achievement of the Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - and if you meet the relevant university entry criteria - you could progress to a full-time Engineering course in Higher Education (eg a Foundation Degree or BEng).

Alternatively, and with employment in a qualifying role, an apprenticeship in Engineering would be possible: this qualification can be used as credits/evidence towards the apprenticeship knowledge elements.
