Course Summary

This course is for internal candidates and is College certificated. It allows students time to adjust to the large step from a Level 1 to a Level 2 course. It develops students' practical skills, preparing them for employment within the animal care industry.

Entry requirements

You need one of the following:

  • Introductory Diploma in a related subject
  • Good attendance and reports from your lecturers

You must have a minimum of a Merit grade to progress to the Level 2  Diploma in Animal Care the following year.

How will I be assessed?

We will work closely with you and, if we feel it is appropriate, you can work towards a City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Animal Care.

You will be assessed continually throughout the course using a range of methods including exams, assignments and practical assessments.  You will build a portfolio of assessments throughout the year that can be graded as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction star.

 

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will be required to supply your own:

  • Lab coat
  • Closed-toe flat safety shoes/boots/wellingtons (with steel toe caps)
  • Lunch/refreshments
  • Writing materials
  • Suitable clothing – all clothing you choose to wear will need to be suitable for a practical session e.g. it should be free from drawstrings and long jeans/trousers should be worn
  • Derby College uniform, polo shirt and sweatshirt.

Long hair should be tied up and no jewellery or nail varnish is to be worn.

What can I do after this course?

You can progress to the full Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care or go into an apprenticeship or employment.
