The Performance Golf Academy programme provides talented young golfers with the opportunity to develop their golf skills while studying academic qualifications in Sport.
The College’s partnership with Performance Golf and Morley Hayes Golf Club enables students to benefit from the expertise of highly qualified and respected coaches, which enhances the golf-focussed curriculum.
Applications are welcomed from individuals who regularly participate in golf and who show a desire and willingness to develop their sporting performance. Ideally golfers would be playing at - or playing towards - a single figure handicap.
Entry to the Level 3 Sports Coaching and Development course requires candidates to have a minimum of five GCSEs at levels 9-4 (A*- C), including English and Maths, in order to access the full Performance Academy schedule.
Students may also be able to access the Performance Golf Academy by studying at Level 2 or A-levels, depending on whether the timetable fits in with training sessions and fixtures. GCSE resits will take priority over the Performance Golf training sessions.
The course includes:
A dedicated three-day-per-week training calendar
Opportunities to progress to elite level pathways
Access to an extensive range of regional and national tournaments
A comprehensive competitions programme
Technical and tactical coaching
Psychological, physiological and lifestyle management
Strength and conditioning support
All students will study a full-time Sport qualification alongside the Golf Academy requirements.
How will I be assessed?
Students will build a portfolio based around evidence generated by the various assessment methods in each unit. They can expect to be assessed through:
logbooks and performance records
written reports and essays
discussions and vivas
Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?
You will need to have a uniform that is worn every day and when you are on work experience. The minimum expectation for the uniform is that you wear a plain black T-shirt or polo shirt and sweatshirt etc. DCG uniforms can be purchased for £50.
All learners must have a tablet or laptop to aid them with their studies.
A one-off payment of £50 is required as a contribution towards the end-of-year celebration event, DBS requirements, transport, trips and guest speakers. This money is to be received before November and in return you will have free gym membership for the academic year.
There may be additional costs incurred for selected trips or visits.
Overseas work placements are available.
For applicants from outside the region or who travel over distance, the College has residential accommodation if required.
Residential accommodation is based at Broomfield Hall Campus. It is single occupancy with a daily meal allowance included in the fees. For further information about our 'outstanding' Ofsted-rated accommodation provision, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Academy fees are set by Performance Golf. Any questions regarding these fees should be addressed to Nigel Furniss at Performance Golf. As part of the fees, players will receive a Performance Golf kit package.
What can I do after this course?
On successful completion of the course, students can apply for a higher level of study with Derby College Group such as the:
Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching
Alternatively they may wish to seek employment within the sports and active leisure sector. A number of Performance Golf Academy graduates have gone on to work in golf clubs, to work towards professional status or have been offered golfing scholarships in the United States.
