Certificate in Skills for the Sport and Leisure Industry - Level 1Apply Now »
Location: Broomfield Hall
This Level 1 College Certificate in Sport study programme is designed for students who must focus on achieving their GCSE English and Maths grades, and whose achievement in these subjects is at level 2-1.
Students will study a Sport programme which supplements the delivery of Functional Skills so they can achieve these qualifications.
They will also have the chance to achieve technical qualifications such as SL1 and First Aid and to gain valuable careers opportunities through work placements.
A Sports programme covering the core concepts will prepare students for studying Sport at Level 2.
The course is designed for students with low-level GCSE grades (3-1) or limited qualification achievements. It is essential that you show a commitment to maintaining high standards of behaviour and attendance and to meeting deadlines.
Candidates will be invited for an interview and screening test as part of the application process. You are welcome to attend the Sport Information Evenings held at the College throughout the year for further details.
The programme will enhance your understanding in:
Searching for sports jobs
Participation in exercise programmes
Working in a sport and leisure environment
Taking part in sport
Health and fitness
You will develop your skills in maths and English to support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills.
You need to be aware that certain volunteering events take place at weekends and you will be expected to attend these or find work experience in your free time.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment methods will vary. You are expected to build a portfolio of evidence for each unit. Assessments will include presentations, essays, workbooks, discussions, practical performance, physical testing and role play. You will need to meet deadlines and work on multiple tasks throughout the year.
Maths and English will be assessed through a controlled assessment
or final exam.
Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?
You will need to have a uniform that is worn every day and when you are on work experience. The minimum expectation for the uniform is that you wear a plain black T-shirt or polo shirt and sweatshirt etc. DC Uniforms can be purchased for £50.
All learners must have a tablet or laptop to aid them with their studies.
A one-off payment of £50 is required as a contribution towards the end-of-year celebration event, DBS requirements, transport, trips and guest speakers. This money is to be received before November and in return you will have free gym membership for the academic year.
There may be additional costs incurred for selected trips or visits.
Overseas work placements are available.
For applicants from outside the region or who travel over distance, the College has residential accommodation if required.
Residential accommodation is based at Broomfield Hall Campus. It is single occupancy with a daily meal allowance included in the fees. For further information about our 'outstanding' Ofsted-rated accommodation provision, please contact email@example.com
If you also join one of our sports academies, such as Derby Trailblazers, you may be required to purchase an academy-specific uniform which is an additional cost set by that academy.
Financial assistance is available, depending on your circumstances.
What can I do after this course?
This course is designed to allow you to move to higher level Sport programmes to develop your skills further, or to another course in another area of study. This will be dependent on your attendance, behaviour and references from teaching staff. The achievement of maths and English is a priority for progression.
Courses that would be suitable are:
Level 2 Certificate in Security and Protective Services
Level 2 Certificate in Sport
Level 2 Gym and Fitness Instruction
The skills you gain are transferable to a wide range of career areas but will particularly enable you to join organisations within the sport and leisure sector.
