Course Summary

This course is designed for students who are aged 19 plus and who wish to enter employment in a variety of health and social care sectors.  Additionally, it gives you the opportunity to progress further to an Access to Higher Education programme.  

Delivered by a team of well qualified, enthusiastic and experienced teachers over two days a week, this course provides all the support and guidance you need to be successful.  The team has a wealth of experience in delivering courses for the adult learner.  Study skills are embedded into the course, and support is given with note-taking, researching, IT, listening and communicating, essay writing and referencing.  You will also be allocated a personal tutor who teaches on the course and can give you advice and support.

Alongside this programme, you may be able to study for English and Maths qualifications to improve your overall employability or to support your application for an Access to Higher Education course.  This could entail GCSEs or Functional Skills, depending on your academic level.


Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. All applicants will be invited to an interview where they will be screened for maths and English.  You will be given comprehensive advice and guidance, and also have the opportunity to discuss any experience you have had and other related issues.

You are also encouraged to attend College Information Evenings prior to any application. Dates for these can be found on our website.

Course Content

Students will study nine credits over 10-12 weeks.*

Mandatory unit

  • Investigating a Career (3 credits)

Biology units

  • Skeleton and Muscles (3 credits)
  • Heart and Circulatory System (3 credits)
  • Physiology and Exercise (6 credits)
  • Diet and Nutrition (2 credits)
  • Eating Disorders (1 credit)

How will I be assessed?

While on the programme, you will be assessed using a variety of methods, including written assignments, practical work, reports, group discussions and poster presentations.

What can I do after this course?

There is the potential to progress to further study, including Access to Higher Education programmes where you can take pathways such as Health Professions and Social Sciences.

This course is also excellent preparation for progression into employment, as it will benefit your personal development, confidence and interview techniques.
