Course Summary

Correct feeding and nutrition is paramount to animal health and husbandry. 

This qualification provides you with the opportunity to learn about current and modern techniques in the practical feeding and nutritional requirements of animals. It allows you to specialise in a particular animal group in line with your area of work or interest – in this case, it is small exotics.

You will gain the skills and knowledge that are important for working with animals, with particular emphasis on feeding and nutrition.

There are lots of career opportunities in animal care environments such as a kennel or cattery or in a retail environment such as a pet shop or store. You could also progress to further learning and training in this field.


Entry requirements

You will need to be 16 years or older and have a keen interest in small exotics and animal nutrition.

Course Content

Mandatory content covers: 

  • feeding requirements of animals at different life stages and for different purposes 
  • nutritional values and properties of different food types and diet plans
  • use of additional foodstuffs and supplements 
  • presenting food and the effect on food intake


How will I be assessed?

There is one-to-one practical assessment with oral questioning.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will need to supply your own steel toe-cap boots.

What can I do after this course?

You may go on to become an Animal Care Assistant or Pet Retail Assistant.
