The world of business is broad based and dynamic. This ever-changing environment offers stimulating and rewarding careers in a range of sectors.
The Higher National Certificate in Business is a two-year part-time course which enables you to study modules and topics that are relevant to a range of careers. This broad focus enables you to complement your professional experience with a strong grasp of the underpinning principles that support a successful career in business.
The programme is offered on a part-time twilight/evening basis which allows you to combine your existing professional role with your studies. Over two years you will study ten modules which will cover a broad range of business-related subjects. With assignments linked to your professional work context, you can make an immediate impact within your current organisation. You will be expected to undertake independent study for at least 4-8 hours per week.
All business organisations demand well qualified, versatile and adaptable staff with high-level skills, knowledge and sound business acumen. This course will give you the transferable skills needed to meet the changing circumstances of business practice. It will also open up potential opportunities for further study, including progression to a Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degree or Honours Degree in subsequent years.
The programme will be delivered via lectures, seminars and tutorials while you are in College. Outside of College, there will be opportunities for independent directed study and self-managed learning using a range of resources, including e-resources.
The programme is delivered by staff who have current experience of running their own business and who use this knowledge to give real-life examples of how the theory of business looks in a practical context.
This course will be delivered in the Higher Education Centre at our Roundhouse Campus in Derby city centre. The programme will run with a minimum of six students. In 2014-15 we enrolled six students on the programme.
The programme is regulated by HEFCE and the qualification is awarded by BTEC.

Your knowledge and understanding for all modules will be assessed through a variety of methods. These will include written work such as assignments, group work and presentations. Assignments can be linked to your professional work context to give your studies a personal relevance and impact.
All assignment activity will support you in developing skills in academic writing, verbal presentations, team work and analysis. The College offers a comprehensive development programme as part of your studies to support your progression in these areas.

The level of independent research and critical thinking completed on this course - as well as the assessment methodology - helps to prepare students for further study at either a Higher National Diploma or degree level. As it leads to a vocational qualification, the course also provides students with a range of skills and knowledge that can be readily applied in the workplace and may lead to opportunities for career progression.
