Course Summary

There are two distinctly different job roles within this occupational profile: Hairdresser and Barber.

Hairdressers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create a variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for ladies and men.

Barbers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using barbering techniques, style and finish hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men.

Hairdressers and barbers must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients; demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role; and work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.

  • Hair relaxing treatments and techniques

Barbering route

  • Cut facial hair into shape
  • Shaving services

How will I be assessed?

The end-point assessment stage will provide a “snap shot” holistic assessment of your practical skills, similar to an industry trade test. You will demonstrate you can complete a range of services on a number of models to industry standards and within commercial timings. Your consultation skills, communication skills, safe working practices, professionalism, values and behaviours will be assessed by practical observation and oral questioning.

Route 1: Hairdressing end-point assessment
You will be assessed while carrying out consultation for all services completed during the assessment. You must shampoo and condition hair as part of at least one service for the end assessment. This may be more as appropriate.

Route 2: Barbering end-point assessment
You will be assessed while carrying out consultation for all services completed during the assessment. You must shampoo and condition hair as part of at least one service for the end assessment. This may be more as appropriate.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

Your employer will need to provide you with any personal protective equipment required legally and for you to undertake your role safely.

What can I do after this course?

You can progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing or Barbering.
