Derby College is showing its support for Colleges Week which takes place from Monday 15 October to Friday 19 October 2018.
Chief Executive, Mandie Stravino is personally contacting all local MPs to make them aware of the campaign and a group of staff will be travelling to London on Wednesday 17 October as part of the national lobby of Parliament.
Colleges Week is part of the Association of Colleges ‘Love Our Colleges’ campaign - a partnership between Association of Colleges (AoC), National Union of Students (NUS), Association of College and School Leaders (ASCL), University and Colleges Union (UCU), Unison, GMB, TUC and National Education Union (NEU).
The campaign aims to highlight the valuable role that colleges play in local communities to help people of all ages and backgrounds make the most of their talents and ambitions - whether it’s through top-class technical education, basic skills or lifelong learning. These are crucial in driving social mobility and providing the skills to boost local and regional economies.
However, there is currently a reduction in education funding once a student turns 16 – whether they are in a school sixth form or a college. ‘Love Our Colleges’ is calling on government to increase 16-19 funding by 5% a year for five years.
It is also asking the Department for Education to provide exceptional funding, ring-fenced for teacher pay.
Please keep an eye out on the website and our social media sites for more information about the activities we have planned and please re-tweet and share our messages to further raise the profile of this important campaign.
