Hospitality and Catering Courses at Derby College

Derby College Group has made the decision to cease delivery of full time Hospitality and Catering courses from this summer and focus all training on apprenticeship routes.

The decision is line with national research and feedback from the Hospitality and Catering industry that on the job learning through the apprenticeship route is preferable for both individuals and employers alike. Anyone who has applied for a full time study programme in Hospitality and Catering has been contacted and offered support to apply for an apprenticeship or an alternative study programme based on their career goals.

Getting into hospitality and catering

  • Apprenticeships Available through Derby College, an apprenticeship in Hospitality and Catering would allow you to gain work experience and relevant qualifications in areas such as catering, food and beverage service, front of house reception, housekeeping and hospitality supervision. For some apprenticeships, you will need GCSEs or Functional Skills in English and Maths.
  • Higher education There are degrees in subjects such as Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts. You can either take these full time after more advanced college courses or part time alongside a job.
  • Jobs You can go straight into some catering and hospitality roles, such as waiter or waitress, kitchen assistant or room attendant, with few or no qualifications at all. Once you are in post, you will usually receive on-the-job training from your employer. The training given in this industry is broad based. You will also learn transferable skills, such as teamwork and problem solving, which will be useful in any career.

Maths and English

You need English and maths skills to get on in life. They will support your studies at the College, help with everyday tasks and pave the way to future career success.

If you don’t already have a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths – or equivalent qualifications – you will continue studying these subjects as part of your course at Derby College.
