Course Summary

The Level 3 Certificate in Practical Horticulture focuses on developing the essential basic horticultural skills. These not only offer opportunities for employment, but also provide the foundation for further skills development at Levels 2 and 3.

By carefully focusing on key essential skills, it has been possible to develop a practical qualification that can be studied on a part-time basis, either during the day or in the evening. RHS theoretical and practical qualifications are offered separately in order to provide maximum flexibility to candidates, providers and employers. 
 

Entry requirements

You need a Level 2 RHS or equivalent qualification, such as a Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture (Dist) or Subsidiary Diploma at Level 3. 

Course Content

  • Soil testing
  • Plant propagation
  • Establishing and maintaining a range of different plant forms
  • Plant, weed, pest and disease identification and control
  • Management of green spaces, landscaped areas and ornamental gardens
     

How will I be assessed?

The course will be assessed throughout its duration to meet RHS criteria.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will need to provide your own:

  • Steel toe-capped boots
  • Secateurs
  • Knife
  • Writing materials

What can I do after this course?

After the course, students can progress to the HNC in Professional Gardening or complete the Level 3 Garden Planning unit.

Callum’s horticultural career takes root

A loving grandfather’s gift of an allotment sowed the seeds of a growing career which is being nurtured by Derby College.

Calum Reeves was just eight when his grandad passed away and he inherited the plot they had spent hours together tending.

Now aged 18, Callum has a part-time job as a fruit and vegetable gardener at the National Trust-owned Clumber Park Estate, while working towards his Level 3 Diploma in Horticultural Studies at Broomfield Hall.

Callum has already gained a distinction at Level 2, and his achievements are all the more remarkable given he is dyslexic and left school with no GCSEs.

Without the help of the college I wouldn’t have got this nice job. I would have had no chance if the staff hadn’t been there to help me get my CV together.
