Course Summary

The Sport and Leisure Supported Internships are available for students with a keen interest in the sport and leisure sector who require additional or special educational support needs.

An internship is an extended work placement designed to provide students with vocational experience and to develop their technical skills. Each internship is planned to last for 12 weeks but these can be extended to cover the full academic year.

Whilst the internship itself offers no formal substantial qualification, smaller professional development qualifications will be delivered to upskill students, which may include English and maths.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to start in a supported internship must register their interest with the College's inclusion department.

The entry requirements for the Sport and Leisure Internship are to:

  • Have effective communication skills
  • Have the self confidence to lead and support sessions
  • Be a good motivator
  • Have good time management and organisation
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in sport and leisure through previous activity history

Course Content

The internship will focus on the primary roles involved in sport and leisure. Interns will work alongside and support coaches, facility staff and personal trainers to gain experience to better understand these job roles.

Day-to-day activities can include: setting up and taking down sports equipment, updating notice boards, arranging fixtures or events, ensuring health and safety is followed, and organising stores and kit.

Further additional training and qualifications will be included based on the requirements of the individual. These will include English and Maths GCSE re-sits if required.

How will I be assessed?

The internship has no formal assessment or qualification but interns are expected to keep a detailed work diary over the duration of their programme.

All interns are expected to have exemplary attendance and punctuality and must be properly presented in College uniform at all times.

A professional development plan and skills audit will be developed to plot out the intern's next steps towards their chosen career path.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

There are no additional costs.

What can I do after this course?

Further Study

Interns may wish to progress to a suitable course in sport, commensurate to their GCSE profile and support requirements.

Careers

Interns may wish to continue towards employment in their chosen specialism. Alternatively, they may wish to start a different internship to gain further experience and industry knowledge in another discipline.
