Course Summary

The Level 1 College Certificate in Skills for the Fitness Industry study programme is aimed at the student who wants to pursue a career as a fitness instructor or health advisor. The year-long course will combine the development of English and maths skills with a programme of gym instruction, first aid and physical activity. The programme is designed to help students to progress to a Level 2 Diploma in Exercise and Fitness Instruction in Year 2 by ensuring their English and maths skills are advanced.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for students who have low scores in their GCSEs or limited GCSE achievement. You will need to have five GCSEs graded at level 4-2 and have a desire to improve your maths and English performance scores as this will be a key focus of the study programme.

You should be able to demonstrate high standards of discipline, punctuality and attendance. It is essential that each student works to the deadlines set or they may face changes to, or withdrawal from, their study programme.

Practical sessions are compulsory, so you must also be physically able to take part in both indoor and outdoor sessions, and ensure good personal hygiene. Although current gym membership is not required, you will be expected to use the gym as part of your ongoing professional development.  

Course Content

This study programme will focus on developing your English and maths skills to prepare you for higher level courses.
 
You will cover key topics such as anatomy and physiology; health, safety and welfare; communication skills; personal hygiene; customer service; lifestyle; and diets.
 
The course is made up of a number of stand-alone qualifications including:
  • First Aid
  • Physical Activity and Fitness
  • Functional English
  • Functional Maths

The course will also include a work placement and tutorials.

How will I be assessed?

Maths and English will be assessed through a controlled assessment or final exam.

You will build a portfolio based around evidence generated by the various assessment methods in each unit.  You are expected to work on multiple assessments at any one time and can expect to be assessed through:

  • practical demonstration
  • logbooks and performance records
  • written reports and essays
  • presentations
  • workbooks
  • discussions and vivas

 

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will need to have a uniform that is worn every day and when you are on work experience. The minimum expectation for the uniform is that you wear a plain black T-shirt or polo shirt and sweatshirt etc. DC Uniforms can be purchased for £50.
 
All learners must have a tablet or laptop to aid them with their studies.
 
A one-off payment of £50 is required as a contribution towards the end-of-year celebration event, DBS requirements, transport, trips and guest speakers. This money is to be received before November and in return you will have free gym membership for the academic year.
 
There may be additional costs incurred for selected trips or visits.
 
Overseas work placements are available.

For applicants from outside the region or who travel over distance, the College has residential accommodation if required.

Career options kick off for sports student Beth

Sports enthusiast Beth Wood is weighing up study options and a potential career thanks to her college course and work placement.The seventeen-year-old Level 3 Sports Coaching and Development student has completed the first year of her course with the offer of an apprenticeship.On work experience, as part of the course, she so impressed bosses at children' coaching company First Grade Sports that they first gave her a job teaching children in holidays and half terms.Now they have now gone one step further and offered an apprenticeship.Beth is also considering whether to go on to higher education at Derby College or whether to experience university life.

She said: "Without the college I wouldn't have got the chance of my work experience, or my job, or the offer an apprenticeship. My work experience helped me to understand how to teach different ages and abilities. It also helped improve my confidence, helping me feel comfortable in my own ability and knowledge."
