Course Summary

This course is ideal if you would like to perfect your beauty therapy skills to work effectively as a senior therapist. You will study body massage, electro therapy treatments and hot stone therapy massage.

Working with our highly trained staff in fantastic facilities, you will also develop communication and customer service skills to support your success in a thriving, exciting industry.

As part of your studies, you will be required to complete work experience to further develop your skills and behaviours to meet industry standards.

Entry requirements

You need to be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in your chosen subject. Offers of a place on the course are dependent on your qualifications and practical aptitude. You will need:

  • a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including English and/or Maths (grade 4 or above).
  • an Intermediate Diploma in the chosen subject to a Merit or Distinction standard.

You will have an interview and initial assessment in maths and English and will attend a skills test. You will also be required to present a current portfolio of work at your interview. Parents and carers are welcome to attend the interview but not the initial assessment.

Course Content

You will study body massage, electro therapy treatments and hot stone therapy massage.

There is also a range of optional units to select from, with guidance from our beauty team.

You will also develop your skills in maths and English, which will support your progress and your progression to further study or employment.

 

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a range of methods including practical observation, oral questioning, written tests, assignments and preparing a portfolio of evidence. 

Maths and English are assessed through a controlled assessment and a GCSE involves a final exam.

 

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

A kit and uniform are required. Details will be available from the curriculum team during the interviews.

What can I do after this course?

Further study
You could consider a Level 4 programme as well as continuing to develop your skills in maths and English.
 
Careers
You can advance your career in beauty salons, health spas or on cruise liners.

Award-winning beautician Ebony plans to train as beauty lecturer

Award-winning former beauty student Ebony Saxton loved her Derby College course so much that she would like to be a beauty lecturer herself one day Ebony, who initially took a VRQ level 2 diploma in Beauty Therapy at the college's Ilkeston campus, successfully completed the advanced programme in Year 2. Described by her tutors as "a vigilant learner who pays great attention to detail", she gained distinctions in all her units, exceeding her targets.And, in recognition of her hard work and dedication she received the Sensi Hairdressing, Holistic & Beauty Therapy Award in the Derby College Peak Awards. It was this same professionalism and motivation while on work experience in a Kimberley beauty salon which led to Ebony getting a job she loves. As a trained therapist with Izabella's Secret, Ebony does massages, facials, manicures and pedicures – with nails her favourite treatment. Ebony, who served in the army cadets while at school, had a great time at college and would like to return at some stage so she can one day lecture in beauty therapy.

I loved college so much that I miss it. I learned such a lot on my course and the lecturers were amazing.
I'm still learning in my job but at some stage I'd like to go back to college and train to be a lecturer.
I got some experience in teaching in the army cadets and really enjoyed it.
