This course offers an introduction to criminology, the scientific study of crime and criminals. The Level 2 certificate is designed to provide learners with an effective experience in developing study skills and the initial stages of learning of concepts, theories and perspectives which characterise criminology.
There are no formal entry requirements. However, the assessment of the certificate requires basic research skills and skill in formal writing.
The course includes two mandatory units which cover aspects of crime and the criminal justice system, crime and social groups. Students will explore the distinction between crime and deviance, different types of crime, theories of criminality and analyse the way that crime is measured.
There are two main forms of assessment. Unit 1 is assessed via a 1000-1200 word essay and unit 2 is assessed via a controlled assessment.
This course could be utilised alongside other Level 2 qualifications as entry to Level 3 courses such as Access courses.
