Course Summary

English skills are vital in all aspects of our life, whether it be at work, study or home.

These short qualifications are ideal for adults who lack confidence with reading, writing or speaking in groups. They will allow you to develop these skills in a safe, friendly and relaxed environment, working with other adults at the same level.

This course is also delivered at our Roundhouse and Ilkeston Campuses.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to access this course.

All applicants will be invited to an interview and assessment session. The assessment will give us an indication of your current level and learning needs. On completion, we will either offer you a place on the course or discuss your options.

Should this not be the most appropriate level for you, we offer a variety of English courses including Entry Level short awards, Functional Skills and GCSEs.

Course Content

During this course, you will:

  • Gain underpinning grammar, punctuation and spelling skills
  • Develop reading and writing skills
  • Improve your communication skills in speaking, receiving and responding to information

How will I be assessed?

At the start of the course, you will be assessed to find out what you need to learn. You will then agree an individual learning plan appropriate to your situation and needs.

Qualifications are obtained by completing a few short assessments as you progress through the course. There is no final exam.

What can I do after this course?

These courses are great for improving your reading, writing and speaking skills. You could then progress to Functional Skills and GCSE English qualifications.

Former carer Steph passes five courses to target teaching career

A long-time carer with elderly people has forged a new career in the classroom with deaf youngsters after passing five separate courses at Derby College. Dedicated Stephanie Davis, 47, switched direction after 20 years and joined Derby's Royal School for the Deaf as a residential worker in 2008. Now she has gained a string of qualifications, passing Functional Maths at Level 1 and 2 and Functional English at Level 1, as well gaining NVQs in working with children in a residential setting and as a teaching assistant. Now Stephanie, from Mackworth, is studying for Functional English Level 2 and aiming to go on to study for a High Level Teaching Assistant qualification at Level 4. Promoted to Senior Teaching Assistant (Teaching Support), Stephanie says that could be a stepping stone towards her dream job as a teacher at the school. Previously she gained qualifications with Derby College, in Community Care and Caring for the Elderly.

Stephanie said: "Every step of the way I've been supported by the college. I'm not a natural at English but the college has given been brilliant and helped my confidence no end."
