Course Summary

This qualification is designed for aspiring coaches seeking to gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to coach people as part of their normal role.  It is an ideal starting point for a career in coaching.

Entry requirements

All applicants must attend a bespoke information session and informal interview to discuss their qualifications, experience, workplace role, motivation and aspirations.

You need evidence of:

  • A Level 2 English qualification (or screening at Level 2 if you do not have evidence of this)
  • Achievement of at least a full Level 3 qualification or demonstrate the ability to work at Level 3 (e.g. through experience/job role)
  • Access to six hours coaching of employee(s) with supervision and support
  • The capacity to attend eight classroom-based learning sessions during the programme, take part in a minimum of two tutorials and engage in one workplace visit/observation.  Independent study will be a core element of your learning and achievement in this course.

Course Content

Units in this qualification focus on understanding good practice in workplace coaching.  The units are:

  • Understanding Good Practice in Workplace Coaching (3 credits)
  • Undertaking Coaching in the Workplace (4 credits)
  • Reflecting on Workplace Coaching Skills (3 credits)

The course is delivered using a range of classroom-based learning activities and an observation of you in your own practice. 

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through coursework and a range of assessment methods is used. These include observations of your practice, self-evaluation, reflective tasks, written assignments, individual and group presentations and professional discussions.  All assessment methods have been designed to focus on skills specific to the professional coach, while incorporating key transferable skills.

All assessments require you to apply theory to your own practice and you are expected to engage with academic research and learning theory in a manner commensurate with higher-level study.

What can I do after this course?

This qualification may provide progression opportunities to other ILM qualifications such as the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring or in Leadership and Management.

You could also progress into a coaching or mentoring role in the workplace, including in an educational setting, or into a work-based teaching and learning role such as assessor-coach.  For those delivering training or teaching, it can lead to teacher training, such as the PGCE (Level 7) or Certificate of Education (Level 5).

Coaching and mentoring Level 5 a “goldmine” for Dawn

Ambitious Dawn Sheils-Houston says the world has opened up to her after completing a “goldmine” study programme at Derby College. Dawn works for Derbyshire Constabulary as an Attraction and Engagement Officer - encouraging unrepresented groups to join the force. To support her work and to boost her skillset, Dawn was determined to learn more about the practicalities of coaching and mentoring.
 
A contact at Derby College Group (DCG) recommended the part-time ILM Level 5 course, which involved one evening lecture a fortnight. Dawn, who has an LLB Honours Degree in Law, said it involved a substantial amount of research and studying at home. She found it to be a lot of work but “a magical experience”.
 
As part of her studies she coached two police employees, who both gained promotion. She said the lectures and constructive feedback by tutor Lesley Jackson were superb.
 
Dawn said: "I wanted the course to be practical as well as theoretical and it was absolutely out of this world. I was learning so much. It was a goldmine of invaluable information which allowed me to find this nugget.  I’ve now got the skills and endless opportunities. It’s a massive evolving area.
 
"My dad came over on the Windrush, from Jamaica. He was a hardworking man. He told us as children that, ‘if you stay in bed you would end up being poor’."
