Course Summary

We offer training that enables an animal medicine advisor to prescribe and supply animal medicines for Companion Animals according to the UK’s legal requirements.

Working with AMTRA, the independent regulator that keeps a register of Suitably Qualified Persons (SQPs), we offer the Base and Companion Animal (Level 4) modules leading to the C-SQP qualification. 

Entry requirements

You need some basic literacy and numeracy skills as well as some basic knowledge of animal care.

You should be aged 18 years or over.

Course Content

Base module

  • Body systems
  • Nature of medicine
  • Resistance of parasites to medicines
  • Customer communication
  • Disease challenges

Companion Animal Module

  • Application of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) Code of Practice to the role of an SQP in issues related to companion animals
  • Identifying the specific disease challenges of companion animals and devising appropriate methods of prevention and control within the limits of a C-SQP 
     

 

How will I be assessed?

  • Base Module – Time constrained exam and viva
  • Companion Animal Module – Time constrained exam (Multiple choice)

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

Learners must enrol directly with AMTRA before booking a training course at Derby College. Registration and examination fees are paid directly to AMTRA. The fee paid to AMTRA will cover provision of a training manual and the examination.

The fees detailed under costs are for tuition of the exam content only and are paid to Derby College.

What can I do after this course?

Following successful completion of these modules, the learner will be able to apply knowledge from areas as diverse as legislation, animal physiology and internal/external parasites of companion animals to the animal medicines and pet industry.

“Horse-whisperer” Kim aims for degree

A mature student is planning to combine animal management training with holistic skills to launch her own equine therapy business.
Kim Leder, 44, believes her qualifications gained at Derby College courses combined with a previous qualification can help her career dreams come to life.
Long Eaton mum of three Kim is trained to level 3 in holistic therapy and has just completed her HND in animal management at Broomfield.
She is going on to the one year top-up to achieve the full degree at Derby College and plans to go on to launch her own equine holistic therapy business after that.
Kim has combined the course with bringing up three girls nine-year-old twins Sophie and Jorja (corrct) and 11 year old Millie.
Kim said gained a distinction for a module on behaviour which demonstrated how horses responded well to reiki therapy when they were nervous about being saddled.

She said: "The horses responded really well and the difference was quite noticeable. When I got the grades back, I'd got a distinction which was great.

"Hopefully after my degree I'll be able to start my own business."
