What is Functional Maths?
Functional Maths is an approach to teaching maths that helps people to gain the most out of life, learning and work.
Why should I do the course?
Joining a Functional Maths class will give you the opportunity to improve your maths skills and to use these skills for practical problem solving. It will build your confidence in how to use maths in all aspects of your everyday life.
Studying Functional Maths will also give you the chance to achieve a formal qualification at a level equivalent to a GCSE.
There will be up to 15 learners on each course. You will have the opportunity to learn in a variety of different ways in a friendly, relaxed environment.
The course is available at our Joseph Wright, Ilkeston and Roundhouse sites on both a daytime and evening basis.
Functional Maths qualifications are open to anyone who does not yet have an equivalent Level 2 qualification. The level at which you study will be determined at the initial assessment stage.
This course is available at all levels. You will receive guidance on which level is the most appropriate for you. The course will cover:
You will get the chance to apply these maths skills in a wide variety of situations and will gain experience in using maths when making decisions and explaining the reasons behind these decisions.

You will be assessed informally throughout the course to check on your progress. At the end of the course, you will complete an assessment to gain the Functional Maths qualification. This consists of either a written or online test.
