Course Summary

This course is designed for adults aged 19 or over who are considering a future career in art and design.

It is delivered by a team of well qualified, enthusiastic and experienced tutors who understand the needs of Access learners and therefore are able to provide appropriate support and guidance.  You will learn through a wide range of activities including workshops, lectures, seminars, practical projects and presentations.

Access to Higher Education Diplomas ensure that you are well prepared for university study as well as future employment. We therefore deliver the additional subjects of study skills and academic writing. If you are returning to learning after a break from education, this course is for you.

This programme is delivered at our Joseph Wright Campus on different days and at different times which will be discussed in more detail at your interview.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss their qualifications, experience and any other related issues.  You are also encouraged to attend an open evening to discuss the course with the tutors.

Applicants need to have at least a grade C in GCSE English and it is advantageous to have at least a grade C in Maths, although you will be able to study GCSE Maths alongside the course if you do not already have it.

Applicants who have not achieved English and Maths GCSE recently will have to undertake an English and maths assessment.

Applicants also need to demonstrate a keen interest in art and design and should provide a relevant portfolio of practical work at interview - either printed or electronically. In addition, you should have some basic knowledge of contemporary and historic practice.

Course Content

Modules will include*:

  • Observational Drawing
  • Professional Practice
  • Presentation Skills
  • Introduction to Studio Practice
  • Portfolio Development
  • Mounting an Exhibition

* Modules may be subject to change

How will I be assessed?

While on the programme, you will be assessed using a variety of methods: assignments, practical work, group presentations, written essays (practical and theory). All assessment methods have been designed to focus on skills specific to the industry while incorporating key transferable skills.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

Most resources are provided.  However, if you require additional specialist equipment or materials, you will need to purchase these.  More information can be provided at your interview.

What can I do after this course?

This course provides the ideal platform for applying for university courses in Art and Design at the University of Derby, Nottingham Trent University, Loughborough University, and De Montfort University.

There is also the potential for progression to careers centred on art, design, photography and moving image making.

Please note - as with all qualifications - the award of the Diploma does not guarantee progression to a higher education course: this will depend upon learners meeting the conditions set by individual universities for specific degrees.

Career change Cinzia revels in ‘intense’ access course

An "intense" Derby College course is helping put former beauty salon worker Cinzia Corleto on the fast track to a dream job.
Cinzia Corleto, 26, has completed an Access to Teaching Higher Education Diploma after following her instincts to switch career to become a primary school teacher.
Now Cinzia, from Bilborough, has started a three year degree programme in Early Childhood Studies at the University of Derby. She then plans to go on to take her Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) to enable her to teach in primary schools.
Cinzia said one of the great things about the one year access course was that it speeds up the process of launching her new career rather than taking 'A' levels.
She said circumstances meant she moved around a lot as child and she wants to "give something back" by becoming a teacher.
Cinzia said her studies were stretching her and had boosted her confidence in standing up and addressing a group.
She said:

I loved the Access course. They told to me to expect the most intense year of my life - and they weren't wrong.

"The access course has sped things up for my career. I now have so much more confidence in standing up and talking to a group and I feel I am on the right track to fulfilling my dream of being a teacher.
