Course Summary

A Level 3 sports massage therapist’s role includes planning, providing and evaluating sports massage treatments. Treatments can be carried out for pre-, post- and inter-event, maintenance and restorative purposes, using a range of basic massage techniques. 
 
This course introduces you to Sports Massage Therapy. It will help you to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for a career as a sports massage therapist, either employed or self-employed. It will also prepare you for undertaking a full Level 3 Massage qualification.

Entry requirements

You need:

  • English and maths skills suitable for this level of study
  • Good customer service and communication skills
  • Excellent personal hygiene, appearance and professional demeanour

Course Content

You will cover elements of the following topic areas:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Principles of health and fitness
  • Professional practice
  • The principles of soft tissue dysfunction
  • Fundamentals of sports massage treatments

How will I be assessed?

This course will have no formal assessments. However, your knowledge and techniques will be reviewed through in-class questioning and observation.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You may wish to purchase your own massage equipment, fold-away beds and oils in order to practise. This is not, however, a requirement of the course.

What can I do after this course?

Learners who complete this qualification should consider progression to the:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy.

Ever since school, Katy Morten had set her heart on becoming a personal trainer.

By the age of just 21, she had already achieved her career goal – thanks to a sport apprenticeship programme run by Derbyshire Dales District Council in partnership with Derby College.

Having secured a full-time job as an instructor at Bakewell Swimming Pool, Katy particularly enjoys helping people to reach their goals – whether it be weight loss or training for a particular sporting event.

I knew I could get nationally recognised qualifications more quickly on an apprenticeship – and having lots of work experience in the industry under my belt would stand me in good stead when looking for employment. Plus, who could argue with being paid to learn?

There’s a real feel-good factor to my job – just knowing you have helped someone improve their lifestyle and become happier with themselves.
