Are you a fully qualified teacher in post-14 education who wishes to develop a specialism in working with young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities? Are you teaching or planning to teach KS4 in a school or academy, or to teach in a college, with a training provider, in a prison or in the voluntary sector? This module will give you a solid foundation in all aspects of teaching to prepare you for a highly successful career. It is offered in partnership with the University of Derby.
The course is delivered using innovative learning methods, technology enhanced resources and one-to-one observations of you in your own practice. Upon successful completion of this Level 7 programme, you will be well informed about the theoretical underpinnings of approaches to the management of the classroom and associated behaviours.
This module is delivered at the Roundhouse Campus of Derby College and the qualification is awarded by the University of Derby. The course is delivered by our highly qualified and experienced Teacher Training team who were judged ‘outstanding’ for ITE (FE and Skills) in the last inspection (December 2015).

Effective Classroom Management (20 credits at Level 5)
Assessment is through coursework and an exciting range of assessment methods is used. This includes observing multiple examples of best practice to gain an understanding of how behaviour for learning can be enhanced to support positive progression.
Following observations, students are invited to reflect on and critically assess the examples of learning behaviour evident within the sessions observed and apply it to their own practice.
You are required to undertake research and write in an appropriate academic style, using Harvard Referencing systems. All assessments require you to apply theory to your own practice and you are expected to engage with academic research and learning theory in a manner commensurate with Masters level study.
This module, alongside your teaching qualification, provides you with an ideal platform to progress. At Level 7 this would enable you to progress straight to an MA ED. If you progress to the University of Derby, you will already have achieved 60 credits towards your Masters qualification.

Ambitious Dawn Sheils-Houston says the world has opened up to her after completing a “goldmine” study programme at Derby College. Dawn works for Derbyshire Constabulary as an Attraction and Engagement Officer - encouraging unrepresented groups to join the force. To support her work and to boost her skillset, Dawn was determined to learn more about the practicalities of coaching and mentoring.
A contact at Derby College Group (DCG) recommended the part-time ILM Level 5 course, which involved one evening lecture a fortnight. Dawn, who has an LLB Honours Degree in Law, said it involved a substantial amount of research and studying at home. She found it to be a lot of work but “a magical experience”.
As part of her studies she coached two police employees, who both gained promotion. She said the lectures and constructive feedback by tutor Lesley Jackson were superb.
Dawn said: "I wanted the course to be practical as well as theoretical and it was absolutely out of this world. I was learning so much. It was a goldmine of invaluable information which allowed me to find this nugget. I’ve now got the skills and endless opportunities. It’s a massive evolving area.
"My dad came over on the Windrush, from Jamaica. He was a hardworking man. He told us as children that, ‘if you stay in bed you would end up being poor’."
The world’s opened up for me now. I feel I’ve got lots to offer on a practical basis which could change someone’s life.”
