Course Summary

Are you a fully qualified teacher in post-14 education who wishes to develop a specialism in working with young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities?  Are you teaching or planning to teach KS4 in a school or academy, or to teach in a college, with a training provider, in a prison or in the voluntary sector?  This module will give you a solid foundation in all aspects of teaching to prepare you for a highly successful career. It is offered in partnership with the University of Derby.

The course is delivered using innovative learning methods, technology enhanced resources and one-to-one observations of you in your own practice.  Upon successful completion of this Level 5/7 programme, you will be equipped to become an effective teacher in post-14 education. 

This module is delivered at the Roundhouse Campus of Derby College Group and the qualification is awarded by the University of Derby.  The course is delivered by our highly qualified and experienced Teacher Training team who were judged ‘outstanding’ for Initial Teacher Education (FE and Skills) in the last Ofsted inspection (December 2015).   All students benefit from access to the Derby College Learning Resources Centre, the University of Derby library, and the College’s Moodle (online learning platform) pages. 

Entry requirements

All applicants must attend an informal interview to discuss their qualifications, experience, motivation and aspirations.

You need evidence of:

  • An Honours Degree (class 2:2 or above) in a subject relevant to what you teach (for the Level 7 Module only - this is not required for Level 5)
  • A Certificate in Education or PGCE
  • A recognised Level 2 or equivalent qualification in English
  • A recognised Level 2 or equivalent qualification in Maths
  • Access to a minimum of 50 hours teaching each year (in a full teaching role)

All applicants are subject to approval from the University of Derby.  The course will only run with a minimum of 15 enrolments.

Course Content

  • Teaching and Learning for Learners with Disabilities (20 credits at Level 6)
  • Supporting Learners with Disabilities (20 credits at Level 7)

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through coursework and an exciting range of assessment methods is used.  This includes creating a resource for a specific learning disability which is then used with your students and critically evaluated, and an essay which evaluates a SEND curriculum to improve outcomes for young people with SEN and/or disabilities.  

You are required to undertake research and write in an appropriate academic style, using Harvard Referencing systems.  All assessments require you to apply theory to your own practice and you are expected to engage with academic research and learning theory.

What can I do after this course?

This module, alongside your teaching qualification, provides you with an ideal platform to progress.  At Level 7 this would enable you to progress straight to an MA ED.  If you progress to the University of Derby you will already have achieved 60 credits towards your Masters qualification.  At Level 5 it would give you additional credits to progress to a full honours degree.

Throughout the course you will experience a wide range of teaching techniques and will be both supported and encouraged to experiment with these techniques within your own classroom so that you exit the programme as a creative and innovative practitioner.

Caroline Keeton

Foundation degree is perfect stepping stone

Going to university simply wasn't an option when teaching assistant Caroline Keeton left school in the 1980s. But, more than 30 years on, the 51-year-old mum of two is about to start a top up degree course after completing a foundation degree in Children's and Young People's Services with Derby College. Caroline, who left school at 16 with just a handful of CSEs, discovered her interest in learning when she began work as a TA and took a course in childcare. Encouraged by how well she took to studying, she enrolled on a level 4 diploma at Derby College and a PTLS Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) course. Caroline – whose two adult daughters both studied for their A levels at Derby College's Joseph Wright Centre – now plans to use her degree to enhance her current role at a Long Eaton primary School. Rather than train to be a teacher after graduation she wants to become more involved in educational research projects within the existing TA job she loves. Going to Derby College has given Caroline the self-belief she needed to go on to higher education.

She added: "Caroline Friel, our lecturer, played a major part in my decision, and that of other students on my course, to go on and get a degree.
