Course Summary

The Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sports Coaching and Development focuses on the holistic development of the practical, interpersonal and thinking skills required to be able to succeed in employment and higher education. The Extended Certificate is the first year in a suite of larger BTEC qualifications endorsed by CIMSPA.

The course is made up of three mandatory units. Each will be delivered remotely, with assessment weeks that will require either onsite or face-to-face sessions.

Students will need strong time keeping and exceptional organisational skills to excel in their studies. Learning remotely takes a lot of self motivation: learning through this method alongside part-time employment should be well thought through. Candidates will need to have access to sports clubs in order to develop coaching and leadership skills for their practical assessments.

The course is aimed at candidates who may wish to become sports coaches, work in sports-related jobs, or go on to study sport-focussed degrees in higher education settings. This may be an ideal option for adult learners or those without support requirements.

It is advised that candidates should have existing links to sports clubs or associations in order to fulfil the coaching requirements of the course and fulfil part of their work experience placement.

Entry requirements

Candidates are expected to have achieved English and Maths GCSE with grade 4 or higher. Adult learners will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis but will need to be proficient in working at a Level 3 standard.

The majority of the other GCSEs should be grade 4 or higher to provide evidence that you can effectively manage the work demands of the course. 

It is advised that all candidates should have existing links to sports teams, clubs or associations. The course requires students to develop their coaching skills so there is an expectation that they will be motivated to deliver and take part in practical sessions - both in and out of the College environment - with a range of clients.

Although most sessions will be delivered remotely, there will be set dates in the academic year where attendance will be required to fulfil the assessment demands of the course. These dates can be flexible to reflect the candidate's availability and should be confirmed at the start of the course.

 

Course Content

Candidates will study these mandatory units:

  • Careers in the Sports and Active Leisure Industry
  • Health, Wellbeing and Sport
  • Developing Coaching Skills

The study programme will also include work experience totalling 72 hours, tutorial and a range of additional qualifications such as safeguarding and mental health awareness.

How will I be assessed?

There will be ongoing assessment throughout the year. Each unit will be split into a number of assignments and assessed against the unit content. These assessments will be graded on a Pass, Merit or Distinction basis.

Assessments will be a mixture of presentations, reports, practicals and essays, and will form your portfolio of evidence.

Time keeping and organisation skills will need to be strong in order to meet your assessment deadlines throughout the year. It is expected that your virtual attendance will be maintained above 95% throughout the year.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

There are no additional costs for 16-19 year olds but course fees may apply to adult learners depending on your prior level of achievement.

Students must have a laptop to access the delivery and resources throughout the year.  Expect to have your camera turned on during all classes unless otherwise agreed.

When on site, students are expected to wear black tops (T-shirts, jumpers, hoodies etc) when in class and when representing the sports department during coaching sessions. Students are free to wear what they choose on their lower half, as long as it is suitable for the activity being undertaken.

Students may wish to join the HUUB Ribble Perfomance Cycling Academy alongside this qualification to aid their performance in cycling.

 

What can I do after this course?

This is the first year of a three-year suite of qualifcations in Sports Coaching and Development but it is the only remote course that is currently being offered.

If students wish to continue, they will study the Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development and have the chance to progress to the third year, the Extended Diploma, but these are onsite options.

This course is fully mapped to the professional standards of "Assistant Coach" and "Safeguarding and Protecting Children" and is endorsed by CIMSPA. Successful candidates may wish to pursue a career in coaching or go on to study a Sports Coaching degree at DCG or with other higher education providers.

Students may also wish to expand their knowledge and continue their studies in other sports-related courses at Broomfield Hall.

Career options kick off for sports student Beth

Sports enthusiast Beth Wood is weighing up study options and a potential career thanks to her college course and work placement. The seventeen-year-old Level 3 Sports Coaching and Development student has completed the first year of her course with the offer of an apprenticeship.
 
On work experience, as part of the course, she so impressed bosses at children' coaching company First Grade Sports that they first gave her a job teaching children in holidays and half terms.Now they have now gone one step further and offered an apprenticeship. Beth is also considering whether to go on to higher education at Derby College or whether to experience university life.

She said: "Without the college I wouldn't have got the chance of my work experience, or my job, or the offer an apprenticeship. My work experience helped me to understand how to teach different ages and abilities. It also helped improve my confidence, helping me feel comfortable in my own ability and knowledge."
