Course Summary

The Lead Practitioner in Adult Care will guide and inspire team members to make positive differences to someone’s life when they are faced with physical, practical, social, emotional, psychological or intellectual challenges.

They will have achieved a level of self-development to be recognised as a lead practitioner within the care team - contributing to, promoting and sustaining a values-based culture at an operational level.

A Lead Practitioner has a greater depth of knowledge and expertise in particular conditions being experienced by the user of services. They will have specialist skills and knowledge in their area of responsibilities which will allow them to lead in areas such as care needs assessment, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and enablement, telecare and assistive technology. They will be a coach and mentor to others and will have a role in assessing performance and quality of care delivery.

Lead Practitioners in Adult Care may work in residential or nursing homes, domiciliary care, day centres, a person’s own home or some clinical healthcare settings.

As well as covering Lead Practitioners in Adult Care, this apprenticeship standard also covers Lead Personal Assistants who can work at this senior level but who may only work directly for one individual who needs support and/or care services, usually within their own home.

The apprenticeship involves 20% off-the-job training, Level 2 Maths and English, and an end-point assessment. 

 

Entry requirements

The apprenticeship is available for current and aspiring Lead Practitioners in Adult Care who are employed in residential or nursing homes, domiciliary care, day centres, a person’s own home or some clinical healthcare settings. As well as covering Lead Practitioners in Adult Care, this apprenticeship standard also covers Lead Personal Assistants who can work at this senior level but who may only work directly for one individual who needs support and/or care services, usually within their own home.

The apprentice should be aged over 18 and should have a good level of English and Maths.

  • How to contribute to, promote and maintain a culture which ensures dignity is at the centre of practice

Communication

  • Effective communication and solutions to overcoming barriers
  • Legal and ethical frameworks in relation to confidentiality and sharing information
  • Range of technologies to enhance communication

Safeguarding

  • Legislation, national and local solutions for the safeguarding of adults and children including reporting requirements

Health and wellbeing

  • Models of monitoring, reporting and responding to changes in health and wellbeing
  • Range of holistic solutions to promote and maintain health and wellbeing using person-centred approaches
  • Importance of effective partnerships, inter-agency, joint and integrated working

Professional development

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

£350 for the employer to pay 5% of the costs

What can I do after this course?

You can advance to a Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management.

Michael Smith

Michael Smith

Employer academy prepared Michael for his future career

Health care assistant Michael Smith has recently completed his apprenticeship and is already “a really valuable” team member on ward 206 at the Royal Derby Hospital.        
 
Michael, 21, took levels two and three in Health and Social Care at the Roundhouse, where he also gained valuable work experience through the innovative Employer Academy run in partnership with the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.        
 
This voluntary work helped him secure clinical apprenticeship role with the Trust.      
 
Michael trained on orthopaedic Ward 206 and was supported academically throughout his apprenticeship by DCG.          
 
He is now a qualified Health Care Assistant on the ward – following in the footsteps of his mum and brother.          
 
Michael said: “I’m happy as an HCA, but in future I may look at becoming a nurse practitioner or physiotherapist.”          
 
Senior Ward Sister Lynsey Heald described Michael as “a really valuable member of the team” and said his college study programme and work experience through the Employer Academy helped prepare him for the ward.          
 
She added: “He’s really hard working and he’s got a lovely way with the patients, and he gets on really well with the team.          
 
“Doing the health and social care courses really helped because he knew what to expect. They become a bit more confident, as well. We’ve got a recent new apprentice and Michael’s really taken her under his wing.”

I like caring for people, I’m enjoying the job and I really like the team. I’d recommend it.
