Course Summary

This qualification recognises the skills, knowledge and competence required for an individual to work unsupervised as a personal trainer. This includes being able to offer one-to-one training, baseline assessment, nutritional advice and progressive programming specific to the individual needs of a client.

This course is due to commence on Thursday September 12th and runs for 36 weeks. Times are 18.00-21.00.

 

Entry requirements

An understanding of anatomy and physiology is essential.  So too is an understanding of health and safety practices within a gym-based environment.

You should have competency in English and maths to help with the theoretical aspects of the programme.

Although current gym membership is not required, you will be expected to use the gym as part of your ongoing professional development.

You MUST have a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing - Gym-based Exercise or an equivalent award.

 

Course Content

Learners will cover:

  • anatomy and physiology
  • health, safety and welfare
  • principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • communicating with clients effectively and motivating clients to adhere to an exercise programme
  • the principles of nutrition to support client goals as part of an exercise and physical activity programme
  • designing, managing and adapting a personal training programme with apparently healthy adults of all ages
  • delivering exercise and physical activity as part of a programme for apparently healthy adults of all ages.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through:

  • eAssessment
  • multiple choice examination
  • portfolio of evidence
  • practical examination

 

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

There are no additional costs, although candidates may choose to pay for membership towards becoming a Registered Exercise Professional or CIMSPA member or take out gym membership at our fitness facilities.

What can I do after this course?

On completion of the course, you will be qualified for employment in the fitness industry. You may wish to continue your training on other REPs accredited courses such as the:

  • Diploma in Exercise Referral
  • Certificate in Advanced Personal Training

Or with a:

  • Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching
  • Sports Massage Therapy
  • Sport and Exericse Science

Missed exam targets a ‘blessing’ as Flo launches fitness career with college

Apprentice personal trainer Florence Phillips said missing out on the exam results she hoped for was a "blessing" ...because it gave her a chance to go to Derby College and launch her career.
Nineteen-year-old Flo said instead of going to sixth form college, which had been her plan, she opted to go into fitness because she was keen on gym at school.
Having passed sports coaching and development with flying colours as a student at Broomfield Hall, she then landed an apprenticeship at B Physical in Ashbourne.
Flo has now taken a Level 2 Fitness Instructor course and she will complete Level 3 Personal Training this summer.
She enjoys her job and said she made the right decision in coming to Derby College.

I didn't get the GCSEs I needed to go to sixth form, which is a blessing because it meant I went to college.

I find the exams the hardest but the college gives me all the support I need. At college somebody took me to one side and told me this job could be good for me, so I applied and got it.


College has been really important to me. I'd love to be a personal trainer and stay here. I love taking classes. I take about nine a week, which is really good.
