Course Summary

This Level 2 course is ideal if you want to begin working in the dog grooming industry and want to learn the skills you need to work under supervision in a dog grooming salon. The course is run within the commercial salon at Derby College.

Entry requirements

You need to be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in your chosen subject. Offers of a place on the course are dependent on your qualifications. You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at grade D or above or a Level 1 Diploma in Dog Grooming.

You should also have a standard of English and maths equivalent to Functional Skills Level 1.

If you are a mature learner, we may be able to take into consideration your previous experience in your chosen subject. All applicants will be interviewed, will undertake an initial assessment in English and maths, and must present an example of current work. You should also have a keen interest in dogs.

You will be required to work in the commercial dog grooming salon on client dogs so that you gain a realistic experience of a working salon. If you wish, you are able to source your own suitable range of fully vaccinated dogs and book them into the salon at a charge of £10 per dog.

Course Content

You will learn a range of dog grooming skills which include:

  • Preparing and grooming dogs prior to bathing
  • Bathing and cleaning dogs
  • Cleaning and maintaining equipment used for grooming or removing hair from animals
  • Restraining animals
  • Drying dogs and preparing their coats for styling
  • Basic trimming of a dog’s coat
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and bio security of the animal care working environment

How will I be assessed?

Assessments will be both practical and theoretical. Experienced, qualified staff will train you and assess you in your practical assignments. There is also an online multiple choice (GOLA) examination to assess your knowledge and understanding. If you are required to re-sit the GOLA exam, there is an extra charge per exam - price to be confirmed.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will be required to supply your own:

  • Derby College salon uniform (payable during enrolment)
  • Scissor sets (these can be purchased through the College from approximately £150 – again, this is payable during enrolment)
  • Sensible flat footwear
  • Sensible clothing e.g. jeans/trousers
  • Writing materials
  • Lunch and refreshments

What can I do after this course?

Zoe Longdon

Dog groomer Zoe leads the pack after college success

A mature student has praised a part-time Derby College course which allowed her to change career direction and launch the thriving business of her dreams.
Former dog warden Zoe Longdon, 43, said she gained essential support, skills and confidence at Broomfield Hall, while working for her City and Guilds Level 2 certificate in Dog Grooming.
Now Zoe is putting her knowledge into practice by running her own mobile dog grooming service called “Rovers Return”, from Newthorpe, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.
She said level of training provided by lecturer Sue Oliver was above that which can be expected at Level 2 – and the course offered good value for money in comparison to the privately run equivalents  she researched.

“I started in business last summer. Now I’ve got 85 clients and I’m going from strength-to-strength.  I’ve achieved my dream and I’m loving every day.”
