Are you a fully qualified teacher in post-14 education who wishes to develop a specialism in teaching maths? Are you teaching or planning to teach KS4 in a school or academy, or to teach in a college, with a training provider, in a prison or in the voluntary sector? This module will give you a solid foundation in all aspects of teaching maths to prepare you for a highly successful career. It is offered in partnership with the University of Derby.
The course is delivered using innovative learning methods, technology enhanced resources and one-to-one observations of you in your own practice. Upon successful completion of this Level 5/7 programme, maths graduates will be prepared to become a specialist maths teacher and non-maths graduates will gain confidence in teaching maths alongside their subject specialism.
This module is delivered at the Roundhouse Campus of Derby College and the qualification is awarded by the University of Derby. The course is delivered by our highly qualified and experienced Teacher Training team who were judged ‘outstanding’ for ITE (FE and Skills) in the last inspection (December 2015). All students benefit from access to the UDO online platform, the Derby College Learning Resources Centre, the University of Derby library, and the College’s Moodle pages.

All applicants are subject to approval from the University of Derby. The course will only run with a minimum of 15 enrolments.
Assessment is through coursework and an exciting range of assessment methods is used. For assessment you are required to prepare an IT based resource relevant to the teaching of maths. This is then critically assessed through reflection as to its effectiveness, evaluating the impact on learning in line with relevant learning theories.
The written submission involves critical discussion and examination of barriers to learning maths effectively. This explores the potential impact upon maths attainment and its relationship with achievement and progression.
You are required to undertake research and write in an appropriate academic style, using Harvard Referencing systems. All assessments require you to apply theory to your own practice and you are expected to engage with academic research and learning theory in a manner commensurate with Masters level study.
This module, alongside your teaching qualification, provides you with an ideal platform to progress. At Level 7 this would enable you to progress straight to an MA ED. If you progress to the University of Derby, you will already have achieved 60 credits towards your Masters qualification.

Former animal welfare degree student Elizabeth Spinks says Derby College has given her the opportunity to expand her career into teaching. Elizabeth, 26, used her qualification from the University of the West of England in a number of roles – educating animal lovers about cat care – but she felt she needed a more challenging job.
She answered a Derby College advertisement and landed a part-time teaching position which led to a full time post at Broomfield Hall. Elizabeth, from Mapperley, Nottinghamshire, teaches practical and theory in the care of small animals including rabbits, guinea pigs and alpacas. Describing her job as half assessor-trainer/half lecturer, Elizabeth mainly teaches school leavers.
As part of her role she studied part-time after work in Education and Training at Levels 3 and 4 at the Roundhouse in Derby. She praised the motivational and mentoring skills of the lecturers and said the classes were always "relatable" to the workplace. Now Elizabeth is taking her PGCE teaching qualification, while covering for a lecturer on maternity leave. Her aim is to "keep improving" and possibly to progress to become a full-time lecturer.
The lecturers were really good. They kept me really interested, especially after teaching full-time all day, and then going in during the evening: I imagine it’s quite hard work to motivate people.
I found it very good, and really interesting and it definitely increased my confidence a lot for teaching. All the modules were relatable and all the activities were really well planned.
