We have high aspirations and our strategic priorities outline these. They will drive us to create optimistic futures and support our mission to predict and serve our business and civic communities and prepare individuals for the next phase of their lives.

  • Utilise business intelligence to inform a responsive curriculum offer to meet local priorities
  • Co-design learning opportunities with business, co-creating talent for the success of the region
  • Co-deliver holistic pathways to deliver a step-change in academic, College-based technical and apprenticeship outcomes
  • Nurture entrepreneurship and foster creativity, business acumen and enterprise to support positive destinations into employment, including successful business start-up
  • Proactively meet business need to continually upskill and retrain the regions workforce
  • Develop and grow our commercial offer to support investment in our valued resources for the benefit of business and our stakeholders

  • Further develop our community provision to engage individuals with no or low qualifications
  • Promote the benefits of participation in education, focus on social mobility cold spots and create a line of sight to work and independent living for all
  • Increase our local higher education and skills offer to support and encourage widening participation
  • Collaborate with the wider education and skills system to expand opportunities and improve educational attainment
  • Utilise our extensive alumni networks and far-reaching range of advocates and ambassadors to motivate individuals to have ambitious goals and high aspirations
  • Ensure equality and diversity is all-encompassing so that engagement and performance gaps are eliminated

  • Deliver information, guidance and advice which inspires and enables informed decisions and provides individuals with essential career management skills
  • Effectively engage with our school partners to ensure smooth transition to positive destinations
  • Innovate to engender challange and risk taking in our teaching and learning practices to ensure the achievement of aspirational outcomes
  • Ensure our learning environments are safe, accessible and sustainable, provide inspirational learning zones and foster independent study
  • Continue to improve English and maths skills to support positive progress and encourage appreciation of the value of good literacy and numeracy skills in work and life

The University of Derby has been awarded a Gold rating by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) in the UK’s first ever Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). This puts the University in the top 20% of all providers in the UK for the quality of its teaching. 96.3% of University of Derby students are in work or further study within six months of completing their degree*.

The TEF has been introduced by the UK Government to encourage and raise the profile of teaching excellence in universities and colleges, and is intended to help students choose where to study by providing clear information about teaching provision and student outcomes
