Understanding Dogs

Derby College Logo

Derby College is running a six-week evening course for people who want to gain a unique insight in what makes dogs ‘tick’.

The ‘Talking Dogs’ course starts at Derby College’s Broomfield Hall land-based industry campus in Morley on Tuesday February 23 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm and is a fascinating introduction to dog psychology to help animal lovers understand the reasons behind typical canine behaviour.

Tutor Rita Lewis explained: “Dogs are fascinating and extremely complex animals so finding out what makes them ‘tick’ is invaluable both for pet owners as well as for professionals working in kennels, veterinary surgeries and rescue shelters.

“The six-week course has been very popular in the past and is designed to be informative, fun and very interactive.”

Previous learner Andrea Hunt said: “I had just got a five-year-old rescue dog Asia so came on the course to help me better understand her behaviour and help her settle in with us.

“It was fascinating to find out how a dog’s mind works – particularly with the pack mentality and hierarchy.

“We have been able to avoid issues before they became habit such as recognising when Asia was trying to be ‘top dog’ in the family by, say, bounding through the front door ahead of us.

“By holding her back, we are able to make her understand the pecking order and she has settled in really well as part of the family.”

Andrea enjoyed the course so much that she then enrolled as a full time mature student on the Animal Management course with her sights set on working in an animal rescue shelter.
