Footballer Wins US Soccer Scholarship
Derby College student Matt Mayer has accepted a four year soccer scholarship to study and play football in the United States after being talent-spotted by university coaches
The Derby County Community Trust Football & Education student achieved his childhood dream after sending a match video to universities across the States – and was overwhelmed when he received an amazing 5 offers.
Nineteen year-old Matt, who has just completed a Sports Diploma at the college, chose Erskine College after they offered him a combined academic and soccer scholarship.
It was a dream come true for the striker, who has been a member of the recent Derby County Community Trust Football and Education programme at Derby College.
“Being part of the Football and education programme this past year has been a wholly beneficial experience in my football development and academic learning. The coaching and guidance I received throughout the season helped me considerably in developing my game and increasing my performance on the pitch.”
“By receiving coaching week in week out, my USA Soccer Scholarship Profile increased in strength and helped me to attract a large amount of coaches from the USA regarding the opportunity to play for their institution.”
“I also achieved a diploma in Sports and Exercise Science at Derby College. The college worked effectively with Derby County to allow me to get the most out of my football development as well as keeping me on track with my academics.”
The Football and Education programme is now in its second year, and is an opportunity for young keen footballers between the ages of 16 and 19, to pursue football in an elite environment whilst pursuing their academics.
