At Derby College we recognise that every learner has different needs. We work hard to ensure that people with learning difficulties and disabilities can make the most of the educational opportunities we offer.

An exciting new start

We provide a series of courses designed to help you build a more independent lifestyle and develop skills for training and work. It’s all about bolstering your confidence and giving you a new direction. You will find your time studying with Derby College’s LLDD Academy enables you to make more informed choices, speak up for yourself and discover a new sense of control over your life.

Skills for work and life

As well as improving your abilities in crucial areas such as English and maths, you will enhance your personal and social skills. This includes learning experiences which will serve you well in the future, such as going shopping for food, using public transport and managing money. Our Pathway to Working Life courses also give you an insight into a range of occupations, from retail to horticulture, construction to hospitality. You might take part in work placements, voluntary work in the community or enterprise activities to develop products and services. Whatever you choose, it’s a fun and productive way to learn.

You’ll enjoy the positive benefits of a wider circle of friends as well as the chance to take part in the many extra-curricular activities available on campus. Our sports centre, for instance, meets the needs of sports enthusiasts who have a range of physical and learning disabilities.

Supporting your success

Our staff are welcoming, encouraging and motivating. They are dedicated to helping you attain your goals, making your studies as enjoyable as possible and ensuring you don’t feel out of your depth.

We have a Learner Support team which can offer tailored services to match your individual circumstances. These might include mobility support, specialist resources, adapted learning materials, note-takers, communication support workers and general counselling.

Maths and English

You need English and maths skills to get on in life. They will support your studies at the College, help with everyday tasks and pave the way to future career success.

If you don’t already have a grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths – or equivalent qualifications – you will continue studying these subjects as part of your course at Derby College.

We’ll support you all the way: working with you on the right programme of development throughout your time with us.
