Course Summary

This professional qualification is for students with some barbering experience who would like to update their skills and offer new services, such as advanced styling techniques or advanced cutting. 

A City & Guilds qualification, it also prepares them to make greater contributions to the running of a salon.

In order to support their main programme of study, future progression and life skills, students will also develop their skills in maths and English.

Entry requirements

You need to be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in your chosen subject. Offers of a place on the course are dependent on your qualifications and practical aptitude. You will need:

  • a minimum of five GCSEs at grade D or above including English and/or Maths (grade 3/4 or above) and Science
  • an Intermediate Diploma or apprenticeship in the chosen subject to a Merit or Distinction standard

You will have an interview and initial assessment in English and maths. Parents and carers are welcome to attend the interview but not the initial assessment. A small portfolio of your work will be required at the interview or taster day. If you are successful, you will be allocated a place to study. 

Course Content

The apprenticeship leads to a City & Guilds professional qualification.
 
Mandatory modules are:
  • Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • Promote additional services or products to clients
  • Provide hairdressing consultation services
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities
  • Design and create a range of facial hair shapes
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques
  • Design and create patterns in hair
  • Colour hair using a variety of techniques
  • Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
In order to support your main programme of study, future progression and life skills, you will also develop your skills in maths and English.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via a range of methods including practical observation, oral questioning, written tests, assignments and preparing a portfolio of evidence. Assessments are on-going throughout the year.  All practical assessments are carried out on clients in the workplace. Maths and English will be assessed through a controlled assessment or final exam.

Further study
The teaching staff will advise you on the wide range of progression opportunities available. If you go on to further study, you will continue to develop your skills in maths and English.

Kirstie Peel

Hair Angels helps learner Kirstie to grow in confidence

Derby College hairdressing student Kirstie Peel used to be quite shy but since gaining work experience with Hair Angels her confidence has really grown.
Kirstie, who is 17 and from Chaddesden, is about to start her level 3 course at the Roundhouse but works at the Oakwood hair salon on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Since she started coming to the salon in January, Kirstie has attended the Poppies Tea Dance, helping Hair Angels to raise money for their Royal British Legion, and been to a hair show in Nottingham. She has also supported Holly Clarke, the co-owner of Hair Angels, in delivering a shampoo masterclass at Derby College.
As vice chair of the College's Hair and Beauty Employment and Skills Academy Board, Holly has helped many students like Kirstie to come out of their shell and feel more comfortable talking to clients.
Holly and her business partner, Heather Edwards, have provided work experience to many College students in recent years, including six learners in the past 12 months.
Kirstie, who likes colouring best, is now focusing on her level 3 and improving her skills.

Before I started my work experience through Derby College I wasn't that confident and was shy about speaking to clients.



I'm much more confident now than I was in my first year and everyone at Hair Angels has been so supportive and friendly. I'm finding it easier every day. I've really come out of myself.
